MAP AND GLOBE SKILLS

Map skills are intended to be integrated into the curriculum as much as possible.

Objectives: The student will:

Locate and define the basic vocabulary necessary for maps and globe study, (continent, ocean, sea, lake, river, harbor, coastline, mountain, island, desert, peninsula, plateau, and plain)

Label the four main directions and the four intermediate directions using a compass rose.

Read and use a legend on a map.

Estimate approximate distances between two points using a map scale.

Identify the names of the continents.

Be introduced to the hemispheres.

Identify a point as north/south of the equator and east/west of the Prime Meridian by reading degree markings.

Students will locate places using longitude and latitude.

Locate important parallels and identify regions as those of low, middle and high latitudes.
